Anyone who's seen the film Picture Perfect (1997) may remember a quote that's stayed with me for many years; ‘dress for the job you want not the job you have.’ It's been the subject of many a blog post or meme since, too, but in todays' WFH culture, does what you wear for work really matter so much?
Yes, it does. Does what you wear impact your opportunities? Let’s spin this on its head:
It makes sense that if you show up for work ready to face a day in the office - even if you're working remotely - you'll feel as if you're at work and not just schlepping around the kitchen at the weekend. It makes sense to dress for work; our brains and bodies get the signals that we are up and working but what should we actually be wearing to the office or workplace? What you wear shouldn’t be dependent on the ‘job you want’ but more about your brand - the image you want to convey to people you're interacting with, even if it's virtually.
